Every barn mom has a story. The forgotten helmet. The wrong breeches. The snacks that didn’t survive the drive. We’ve all been there.

After a few (okay, many) shows, I’ve finally cracked the code on what to bring, what to skip, and what will save your sanity when it’s 6am and the day hasn’t even started yet. Consider this your official horse show mom survival guide.

Before You Even Pack — Know What Kind of Show It Is

One-day schooling show? Multi-day rated show? The packing list changes significantly. Before you throw anything in a bag, know:

  • How many days you’ll be there
  • Whether stabling is on-site or day-trip only
  • What the weather forecast looks like (it WILL change)
  • Whether your rider needs multiple sets of show clothes

Once you know that, everything else falls into place.

For Your Rider — The Non-Negotiables

These are the things that absolutely cannot be forgotten:

  • Helmet (properly fitted and certified)
  • Show coat or jacket
  • Show shirt and stock tie or choker
  • Breeches — bring a backup pair, always
  • Tall boots or paddock boots + half chaps
  • Gloves
  • Hair net and bobby pins
  • Belt
  • Show number holder

Pro tip: Keep a dedicated show bag for your rider that lives packed between shows. The morning of is not the time to hunt for a stock pin.

For the Horse

Your horse needs to show up ready too, and that means you’re carrying most of it:

  • Grooming kit — brushes, hoof pick, mane comb
  • Hoof polish or oil
  • Show sheen or coat spray
  • Extra braiding supplies if you braid at the show
  • Fly spray
  • Leg wraps or boots for trailering
  • Grain and hay — don’t rely on show vendors
  • Water buckets (at least 2)
  • Medications if your horse is on anything
  • First aid kit — vet wrap, antiseptic, thermometer

For You — The Barn Mom Essentials

Here’s the part nobody talks about enough. You matter too, and you’ll be running on empty by 2pm if you don’t pack for yourself.

Food and drinks:

  • Coffee (non-negotiable — bring a thermos)
  • Water, water, water
  • Easy snacks — granola bars, nuts, fruit, sandwiches
  • A real meal if it’s a full day show

Comfort and survival:

  • Sunscreen — reapply every two hours
  • Comfortable shoes for yourself
  • A camp chair or blanket
  • A portable phone charger
  • Cash — some shows still don’t take cards

For the unexpected:

  • Safety pins (you’ll need them, guaranteed)
  • Extra hair ties and bobby pins
  • Stain remover wipes — white breeches and horses are a combination
  • Pain reliever
  • Band-aids

The Mom Bag Must-Haves

I keep a dedicated “show mom bag” that I just grab and go. Inside it lives:

  • Small sewing kit
  • Safety pins of every size
  • Tide pen
  • Mini first aid kit
  • Snacks
  • Phone charger
  • Cash and a backup card
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • A mini fan for hot summer shows

Once you build this bag — never unpack it between shows. Just restock it when you get home.

The Night Before Checklist

The secret to a smooth show morning is doing most of the work the night before:

  • ✅ Tack cleaned and ready
  • ✅ Rider’s show clothes laid out and checked
  • ✅ Horse bathed (if possible)
  • ✅ Show bag packed and in the car
  • ✅ Alarm set for earlier than you think you need
  • ✅ Coffee maker prepped and ready to go

One Last Thing

Horse shows are loud, chaotic, expensive, and exhausting. They’re also some of the best days of your barn mom life.

The nerves before your kid’s class. The moment they nail a course. The pride on their face when they pick up a ribbon — or when they don’t, but they hold it together anyway.

Pack well, stay fed, and soak it all in. These are the days you’ll talk about for years.
